Conservation and Private Protected Areas

Pumalin Park
Pumalin Park represents the iconic image of a private park, integrating conservation and tourism, increasing the monetary benefits to the adjacent communities. Pumalin Park is located in northern Patagonia, Chile, administered by a non-profit NGO, Fundacion Pumalin.

The 2003 IUCN World Parks Congress defines private protected areas as a land parcel of any size that is:

  1. predominantly managed for biodiversity conservation;
  2. protected with or without formal government recognition;
  3. owned or otherwise secured by individuals, communities, corporations or non-governmental organizations.

PRN unites private conservation efforts and provides tourism options for travelers. Supporters of private conservation are invited to Travel and Visit Private Reserves by searching through our network of private protected areas worldwide.

The Private Reserves Network aims to establish the world's first network of private protected areas by providing useful tools to the private conservationists. Private landowners and organizations are invited to Expand Conservation and Join the Network of Private Protected Areas.
